There is no lack of great cycling and walking routes in the Meetjesland. You can find everything you need at the Meetjesland tourist website. And there’s no need to buy any maps – you’ll find them waiting for you at Schaepsgerwe B&B. You can also plan your own route while you’re still at home or when you arrive at Schaepsgerwe B&B. We can then produce a handy map featuring all of the cycle route intersections to see you safely on your way.
Want to hire a bicycle? We have 4 bikes available that you can use free of charge. These bikes are well maintained, but they are not brand-new. For genuine cycling enthusiasts, we recommend that you go and hire a bike. VIVA VELO, the local bike store is linked to the charity shop and hires out new bikes at attractive prices. Let us know before you arrive so that we can get everything ready for you. That way you can enjoy the beautiful Meetjesland to the full.
The loveliest cycling routes
There are countless cycling routes in the Meetjesland, with ‘De Lieve Vertelt’ one you shouldn’t miss. This route goes through Houtland, the southerly part of Meetjesland, following the oldest canal in Flanders, called ‘De Lieve’. ‘De Kreken Spreken’ takes you on another lovely ride through areas of nature with poetic names such as ‘De Kussende Kreek’ (‘The Kissing Creek’), ‘Molenkreek’ (‘Millstream’) and ‘Boerenkreek’ (‘Farmer’s Creek’).
The most beautiful walking routes
Walkers are also spoilt for choice in the Meetjesland. The Slodderspookroute (‘Lumpy Ghost route’) takes you past castles and along watercourses. The Oude Kalevalleiroute (‘Old Kale Valley route’) winds its way through the castle villages of Merendree, Vinderhoute and Lovendegem. A real gem, just a stone’s throw from Ghent.
